Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru

Touken Ranbu Hanamaru

Available on: Crunchyroll (subbed), Funimation (dubbed), VRV

Series Status: Season 2 complete

200 years in the future, at a beautiful citadel, the most legendary swords in Japan’s history are being awakened as humans. Their task is to periodically travel into the past to stop members of the Historical Retrograde Army from changing the history of the samurai era. In their (ample) downtime, they tend the grounds of their home, partake in human pasttimes like snowball fights and drinking too much, and wait for their (many) brother swords to arrive.

I Quit This When: The cast ballooned to like 54 members, time travel combat ceased entirely, and it dawned on me that this was an anime side story for a computer game, where I have to hope actual plot and character relationships happened. It is a shame, because this plot seemed high interest and full of possibility. I was slow to quit mainly because Sword Boy #1 had a jealous streak that seemed to promise some plot development. He also took really good care of his nails.

All members of the Touken Ranbu Hanamaru cast under a cherry tree.
An unconscionable number of boys.
